Akufo-Addo To Formally Launch Census Of Agriculture Today

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will formally launch the Ghana Census of Agriculture at Sefwi-Wiawso, in the Western Region on Friday June 08.

This would be under the theme “Census for agriculture for accelerated national development”.

The census seeks to collect information from households on agriculture and related activities from all communities in the country and it is being conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) together with the Food and Agriculture Ministry.

A press statement issued by the GSS said the information gathered would aid policy makers to better identify, prepare, implement and evaluate development projects aimed at enhancing the nation’s agriculture.

It would provide up-to-date and reliable statistics for programming and monitoring food security and livelihood programmes.

Additionally, it was going to help in addressing environmental issues, especially at the community level, and to make available fresh data on the structure of agriculture, something vital to the rebasing of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Field work for the census started on April 30, and is expected to be completed by July 31.

The statement said ‘field personnel’ had been visiting households and institutions to identify for enumeration, those engaged in the production of all types of food crop, tree planting activities, livestock, aquaculture and doing fishing in both inland and offshore waters.

It added that for the exercise to achieve the desired outcomes there was the need for cooperation from everybody and said “a successful agriculture census is essential for the development of Ghana”.
