Argentina 1-1 Iceland

Lionel Messi could not inspire Argentina to victory over World Cup debutants Iceland on Saturday as he missed a second-half penalty in the Group D opener in Moscow.

The Barcelona star had the opportunity to put La Albiceleste back in front in the second half at the Spartak Arena after Maximiliano Meza was bundled over by Bristol City's Hordur Magnusson, but a poor spot-kick by his usual standards was beaten away by goalkeeper Hannes Thor Halldorsson.

Argentina had taken the lead after just 19 minutes against Iceland after Sergio Aguero rifled home his maiden World Cup goal, yet the tournament's smallest nation quickly got back on level terms when Alfred Finnbogason capitalised on some less than stellar defending.
