Ashaiman’s "Promised Land" Bridge Collapses After Torrential Rain

Monday evening’s torrential rain collapsed a bridge near the Ashaiman lorry station at Promised Land, a suburb of Katamanso in the Kpone Katamanso District of the Greater Accra Region.

Mr Selassie Julius Adjei, a resident of the area, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the collapsed bridge had cut off the road, leaving commuters with no other option than to use a detour through Madina to gain access to Ashaiman.

He said the bridge had shown signs of collapse when it rained last week, but authorities failed to fix it.

Mr Adjei said the road linked Katamanso to the Regimanuel Estates and the Amanfrom areas, and that the collapse of the bridge had affected economic activities with students compelled to stay at home.

“People on the other side of the community can’t cross to town. Kids are not in school, even my kids. I am stuck home and if I want to go to Ashaiman, I have to go through Madina”, he said.

One person died last year from a similar incident in the area, Mr Adjei said.
