Zongo Youth To Petition President, Otumfuo Over Suspected Murder By Police

The Zongo community in the Ashanti region have petitioned the Royal Occupant of the Golden Stool HRH Otumfuo Osei Tutu II over what they described as murder by the police over the killings of some seven suspected armed robbers by the Ashanti regional police command.

According to them, the police carelessly took the life of innocent Ghanaians who were going about their normal duties.

The seven suspected armed robbers were on Tuesday afternoon gunned down by a team of personnel from the Ashanti Regional Police SWAT Unit at Poano in the Amansie West District.

According to the police, the gun-wielding robbers, believed to belong to a gang who killed the late Lance Corporal Daniel Tieku of the SWAT Unit, last week (June 11, 2018), in one of their operations, were said to have attempted to open fire on the police as they approached them.

However, they were outsmarted and the well-armed police, who had mounted surveillance on the robbers, shot and killed them in the process.

But speaking on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, brother to the one of the deceased suspected armed robbers, Nurudeen Abubakr Ali, expalined that they received with shock the death of the 7 suspected armed robbers and the accompanying report from the police.

These are law abiding citizens who are contributing their quota to national development. They are known Zongo boys who are engaged in various petty trades and other businesses.

Even they assisted the ruling New Patriotic Party during the 2016 elections and they are known 'Delta' boys who have assisted the party in diverse ways.

Nurudeen Ali added that they will not want to take things into their own hands so they will send their concerns to the appropriate quarters for investigations to be initiated into the matter.

We will officially petition the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, HRM Otumfou Osei Tutu II and the President over this because we feel they have killed innocent souls.

However, the Ashanti Regional Police Command say thay are yet to identify the seven alleged robbers gunned down by the police in a shootout at Poano.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kwesi Mensah Duku, the Regional Police Commander, who made this known at a media briefing on the incident in Kumasi, said his outfit has launched a full-scale investigation into the matter to establish the identities of the robbers.
