GOVERNMENT HAS completed the composition of a committee to investigate circumstances that led to the recent shooting of seven suspected robbers by the police in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The identities and positions of members of the government’s committee of inquiry and their scope of work will soon be made public by the government.
Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Asokore Mampong, Alidu Seidu, who made the disclosure, called for calm among the Zongo youth in Kumasi, notably those living at Asawase.
He also entreated people who have vital information about the dicey matter to freely give information to the commission so that the truth would prevail.
The MCE said: “I am in touch with the government machinery as it has completed the composition of the commission of inquiry. The membership of the commission shall be announced very soon to the public, and it shall start its work as soon as practicable”.
According to him, government had resolved to work to ensure that the truth about the matter is unearthed so the Zongo youth should remain calm.
“I therefore urge all the youth, families and all of us to remain calm as the commission of inquiry is about to begin its work. Without vital information from the public, the commission will not be able to unearth the truth so people should support them,” he stressed.
“I equally urge people who have information in relation to this matter to appear before the commission and make their information available to them. Do mention names of all those who have a hand in this incident with absolute disregard for one’s position, rank, political colouration or social status”, he continued.
It would be recalled that seven men were shot dead by the police, who claimed they were armed robbers at Manso-Nkwanta. Five of them were from the Zongo community in Kumasi.
However, residents in the Zongo communities in Kumasi insisted that the seven people were innocent. Therefore, they have staged series of violent protests at Asawase and other areas.
And to help ensure that there is justice in the case, the government stated that it would set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the case in order to ascertain the truth.
