A year into the President Mills administration, the first gentleman of the land has admitted, albeit in an implied manner, that there is not one single economic policy initiated by his government, but a continuation of programmes and policies initiated by the previous administration. He was interacting with the Media at the Castle today, as part of activities marking his first anniversary in power, similar to the observation of his first 100 days in office. Answering a question posed by Kwami Sefa Kayi of PEACEFM, on what perhaps is the single biggest economic policy of the NDC since the party assumed power a year ago; President Mills failed to name even one. He, however, said the government, as a team, has the main objective of improving the living conditions of Ghanaians, adding that government is set to initiate programmes that will ensure �Ghanaians would feel the economy is moving forward in a different direction and that we are building a better Ghana.� �That has been our concern�we�re doing so from different angles, but that has been our concern and my concern as well,� he said. Sefa Kayi also enquired from President Mills, his take on Ex-President Rawlings and his other trusted allies from the Cadres group�s decision to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the 31st December coup despite the outlawing of the occasion by the country�s Supreme Court. The former president is still consummate in the ideals of the 31st December coup-an event which suffered identity and acceptability crisis at birth and was only accepted by a section of Ghanaians after it had cunningly been christened �Holy War or Revolution� to depict a major clean up of the decayed body-politic. This was evidenced in his celebration of the occasion last Thursday, December 31st 2009. But President Mills stopped short of condemning the former President�s observation of the 31st December anniversary by alluding to the Freedom of Association enshrined in the constitution. �There is Freedom of Association in this country, and people decide to mark their associations (anniversaries) in different ways. Therefore if Ex-President Rawlings decides to lay a wreath (on behalf of the people of Ghana), that is his decision,� President Mills said.
