GRASAG Elects Young Female Activist As National President

A Young Ghanaian gender activist, Madam Iris Kwafo-Mensah has been given the responsibility to lead all graduate students in the country for the 2018/19 academic year.

She was elected at the 24th National Annual delegates conference of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) which was held from the 9th to 12th of August, 2018 at the university of Cape Coast

Madam Iris Kwafo-Mensah, is a Master of Public Health Student at the University of Ghana.

This year's congress was held under the theme, "25 Years On; Intensifying Impact through Research, Accountability and Partnership for National Development".

The opening ceremony of this year's congress was chaired by Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, the traditional ruler of Ogua traditional area. He together with other distinguished invited speakers and guests admonished GRASAG and it's members to contribute to national policy discourse and live up to their mandate as partners for the nation's development.

Other executives elected at this year's congress were

Mr Evans Woode from KNUST as Vice president
Ms Judith Arhin from UCC as the general secretary
Mr Festus Otcherefe Amissah as the Financial Controller

Mr Patrick Ameyaw as the Organising Cordinator
Madam Matilda Tenewah Ampadu as Women's Commissioner

Madam Iris Kwafo-Mensah is only the second female to be elected to this position. Prior to this she has been a Women's Commissioner of the National Union of Ghana Students and the National Health Students association of Ghana in 2014 and 2012 respectively.

Iris is a gender Activist and a 2017 Milead Fellow. She is a Teach for Ghana Alumni, a Friedrich Erbert Stiftung YLTP Alumni, a former wonder woman mentor at the making Ghanaian girls great project by Varkey foundation among others. She has vast experience working on women's rights issues and education issues. She focuses mainly on women's sexual and reproductive health rights issues and education in rural areas.

She is hopeful that GRASAG under her leadership will see a new face and will live up to its mandate of being partners in national development through research and practice
