Carjackers have adopted a new way of robbing unsuspecting car dealers and owners of their vehicles.
According to a police statement issued on Monday, August 20, 2018 and signed by the Director Public Affairs, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman, the criminals call numbers displayed on cars for sale and pose as interested persons with the intention of buying the vehicle.
The statement said the criminals will then negotiate to meet the dealer, preferably the dealer’s home and when an agreement is reached, during the test drive the mechanic who was brought along to buy the car will complain of a noise in the car.
It said as curious as the owner is when he or she alights to check what the fault with the car, the criminals will then speed off.
The statement added that the Police have arrested a number of criminals who use this new modus operandi.
The Police is therefore cautioning the public to beware of such persons.
“The Police is also urging car dealers and owners of vehicles ‘on test’ to take precautions such as agreeing with interested buyers, to allow identifiable mechanics operating from static locations to test their cars on sale. Also car dealers may get trusted persons to accompany them on test drives with interested persons,” the statement said.
