Staff of Chirano Gold Mine Ltd in the Western have presented an amount of GHC 30,000 to the Krokrokoo Charities Foundation.
The donation is to support the work of the charity which has targeted to purchase and donate 100 incubators to health facilities across Ghana.
Every year about 140,000 representing 14% of babies born in Ghana are pre-term. Over 8,000 of these premature babies die within the first month of birth mostly due to the unavailability of incubators at healthcare facilities to save their lives.
Presenting the money to the foundation, Transport Officer of Chirano, Mr. Stephen Boateng, who led the donation drive among the staff, said workers of Chirano Gold Mines were moved to support the foundation after it emerged that a lot of pre-term babies are unable to survive due to inadequate or the lack of incubators in many health facilities, including some major ones across the country.
He was hopeful the donation will make a positive impact on the lives of ordinary Ghanaians by saving the lives of many pre-term babies.
Founder of the Kokrokoo Charities Foundation and Presenter of Peace Fm’s Kokrokoo Morning Show, the highest rated radio morning show program in Ghana, Kwami Sefa Kayi, expressed gratitude to staff of Chirano for the gesture.
He said the foundation has so far purchased and distributed 10 incubators at a cost of $10,000 each. Six others are due to be delivered to various health institution in the coming weeks.
Mr Sefa Kayi noted Chirano staff are the first from any mining company in Ghana to donate to the foundation and expressed the hope that it will inspire others to follow suit.
Chirano Gold Mines, Ltd, located at Bibiani in the Western Region of Ghana, is part of the Kinross Gold, a Multinational Gold Mining Company headquartered in Toronto, Canada.
