The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has started a mapping exercise throughout the country as part of the preparations towards the conduct of the 2020 Population and Housing Census.

The mapping exercise seeks to update the 2010 Census enumeration areas. An enumeration area is the smallest spatial unit for one enumerator to work in, during the census period and constitutes one of the most essential aids required to achieve a complete enumeration during the Census.

Enumeration areas are also mutually exclusive and form the basis for ensuring that persons are neither double counted nor left out of the census count.

These enumeration areas are, however, dynamic and are subject to change with changes in population characteristics and so there is the need to update them just before a population census takes place.

Field mappers will be deployed to all localities across the country to update enumeration area maps covering areas with an estimated population of five hundred (500) people. As part of the exercise, Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of certain locations, landmarks and some selected buildings/structures would be taken.

Ghana Statistical Service is, therefore, calling on Members of Parliament, the Security Services, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, Assembly Members, Chiefs and other opinion leaders to assist in communicating this important information to the general public and urging all and sundry to cooperate with the field officers.

GSS counts on the support of all citizens and residents of Ghana for a successful demarcation exercise towards the 2020 Population and Housing Census.
