THERE is hardship in the country. An admission that has been made by no less a person than Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a top-notch member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), who is also a staff at the Presidency.
“THERE is hardship, there is unemployment, and, it is fair to say that the majority of our people continue to struggle to make ends meet. The typical woes of a developing economy that had been recklessly managed. But, it must also be made clear that there is a clear sense of direction on – not only where the Akufo-Addo government wants to go – but also where it is taking Ghana,” Mr Otchere-Darko wrote on his Facebook and Twitter on Friday, September 7, 2018.
FROM the above comment it is clear that the current Akufo-Addo-led government sees that many Ghanaians are indeed struggling to make ends meet.
AND this has further been compounded by the alarming losses of jobs that we continue to read from the newspapers and hear on radio stations.
JUST last week, it came to the fore that more than 2.8 million Ghanaians, representing about 10 per cent of the population, were living in extreme poverty.
THE above figure was revealed in a report by the World Poverty Clock, which showed that about many Ghanaians escaped extreme poverty every hour, giving the country a fairly positive rank on the continent and in the world.
HOWEVER, the other side of the report showed that Ghana was on track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Goal 1 of ending poverty in all forms by 2030.
TODAY believes it is against the above that Mr Otchere-Darko made the case that the Akufo-Addo government was leading the country to its right destination.
THERE is no denying the fact that many Ghanaians are reeling under the current economic hardship.
SADLY, many of our politicians tend to forget that when they get the opportunity to steer affairs of this nation, their primary responsibility is to improve the well-being of Ghanaians.
RATHER we see a party in government that takes delight in still blaming the past administration of messing up the economy. Certainly, that is the reason why majority of Ghanaians decide through the ballot box to vote for a new government if they feel the old one is not doing enough to improve their lot.
SO for us at Today it is funny to hear key members of the NPP still continue to blame the erstwhile Mahama government. One thing that members of the current administration must be clear about is that they have been given a four-year mandate by the majority of Ghanaians to fix whatever ‘mess’ the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government left behind.
THEREFORE, Today expects that the Akufo-Addo administration will work with a sense of urgency to fix the economy and help improve the living standards of Ghanaians.
