The Confederaton of Governance Assessment Institute (COGAI) and Rectitude International Missions have announced their intentions to immortalize the legacy of the late former Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Kofi Annan.
Mr. Annan, a Ghanaian international diplomat who devoted his entire life to world peace and development, died in his sleep in Switzerland on August 18, 2018.
He became the first black Secretary-General of UN in 1996 and served for a two term.
And to help keep his exceptional legacy alive, COGAI and Rectitude International Missions are seeking to set up a special awards scheme to honour individuals, organizations and government ministries that distinguish themselves in their services to humanity and the world in a manner that Mr. Annan did.
The award scheme is to be titled: 'Kofi Annan's Shield of Peace Award' and it is expected to be organized annually in collaboration with the UN.
Director in-charge of Strategic Communications at COGAI, Isaac Rockson explained that the "Kofi Annan's Shield of Peace Prize, and this peace prize is a special event to recognize people who also aim to make Africa a great continent."
His contributions to world peace and development will be recognized in the award, with series of awards planned to project individuals and organizations, ministries that are emulating his lifestyle," he added.
According to him, aside the awards scheme which will see fund being set up, COGAI is looking to establish a university in honour of Mr. Annan where students from all walks of life especially those from the African continent can learn about the late statesman's immense contributions to world peace and development.
The university is expected to be named Kofi Annan University of Excellence.
Touching on why Mr. Annan deserves to be remembered for generations to come, he said "We all know that great heroes like Kofi Annan who have made great impact in the world, we cannot sit down to see Kofi Annan's legacy dies once and for all and it becomes just a history without we remembering Kofi Annan and all his achievements."
He added that "For this reason, COGAI and Rectitude International Missions strongly want to preserve the legacy of the late former Secretary-General of the United Nations."
He bemoaned that Africa has not done enough to celebrate its heroes, saying People like Kwame Nkrumah should have been celebrated across Africa today because of his vision of forming a 'united Africa.'
He urged the youths of Africa to emulate the exemplary life of the late Kofi Annan.
"He deserves that his caliber of person should be emulated across the continent," he said.
Mr. Annan, he said, "exhibited a true statesmanship and these cannot be forgotten." He added his outfit will partner and support the Kofi Annan Foundation.
