Apostle Eric Kwabena Nyamekye, the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost has urged Christian politicians to use their positions to transforms lives and serve the interest of the citizenry.

Apostle Nyamekye said the Church is a pillar and foundation of truth and that it behoves on politicians to uphold the tenets of Christian values to gain the confidence of the public for collective consensus, leading to national development.

“The Church must be seen as a source of inspiration and encouragement for institutions and individuals who are troubled, if the Church is seen to be corrupt, it affects public confidence and there will be no hope for the country,” he added.

The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost said this on Tuesday when Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, a National Democratic Congress (NDC) aspirant for the position of National Chairman, together with his campaign team called on Apostle Nyamekye at the Church’s headquarters in Accra.

The visit was to seek for counsel and prayers from the Chairman of the Church and the entire congregation of the Church for success and victory for the forthcoming national executives elections of the party.

Apostle Nyamekye expressed concern about the mind-set of people vying for political positions and stated that “politics is seen as the cheapest way to make wealth”, instead of working assiduously for the interest of the nation.

“There is so much enmity between political parties especially the NDC and the New Patriotic Party and has even gone into the Church to the extent that both party members see each other as enemies”.

He appealed to Ghanaians to discard that notion and be united, irrespective of one’s political affiliation to work for the love of the country.

The Apostle said politics is a ministry and comes with challenges like any other profession and charged politicians to continue holding on to God when they are elected into political position for guidance on their leadership role.

He expressed worry about the rate at which people build without taking cognisance of streets and paths, and urged the Authorities to be proactive and enforce the rules and regulation governing building.

He assured him of their fervent prayers and urged him not to forget the will of God, because there cannot be success without the presence of God.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo, an elder of the Church of Pentecost, said the decision to visit the Chairman of the Church was to seek divine direction and prayers ahead of the national elections of the party, and believes that the foundation of the campaign starts with the Church.

The NDC National Chairman aspirant, who was also the former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development said he has served in the country’s political arena for 25 years and pledged to continue to project the virtues and values of the Church.

“People think when you are into politics, then you cannot be a committed Christian. The Church had been a source of encouragement in my life. I believe that Christians can also make a change through politics,” he said.

He said because of his faith in Christian activities, he was part of the Members of Parliament who formed the Parliamentary Christian Fellowship during his time in Parliament.

“I believe in infusing Christian virtues into politics to transform lives,” adding, that he took inspirations from the Late Professor John Evans Atta Mills and the late Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur.
