VIDEO: Brogya Genfi ‘Incites’ Vigilante Group, The Hawks

A National Youth Organizer aspirant of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Yaw Brogya Genfi has been captured in a video ‘inciting’ some members of the party’s vigilante group, the Hawks, against the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The former Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser of the NDC is heard emboldening the heavily built young men to be ready to sacrifice their all to protect the NDC party in the 2020 elections which promises to be keenly contested between the two leading parties.

“We’ve met today and are organizing ourselves, as you know there is a major battle ahead of us in 2020 [General elections]. The NPP is using its youth to engage in a lot of crimes in this town, storming courts and police station to cause confusion. For us, we have no such intentions, but we’re readying  ourselves to protect the NDC youth so that we can win the 2020 elections. So I want to encourage you and let you know that the party will heavily rely on you [Hawks] during the 2020 elections. We’re happy with the way you’re ready to sacrifice for the party and I must tell you, this group has the blessing of the General Secretary of the party.”

He added: “I’m saying it emphatically today, if the NCCE or the NPP is listening, they should listen well because we’re battle ready and we’re not going to joke ahead and during the 2020 elections.”

The Kumasi based NDC vigilante group, the Hawks made the media headlines few months ago after the group led by then Ashanti Regional Chairman aspirant of the NDC, Joseph Yamin stormed the party’s congress in Kumawu and halted the elections after they claimed that Joseph Yamin was being cheated.

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in September 2018, condemned the endorsement of vigilante groups especially in the quarters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), giving impetus to entrenching political party vigilantism.

The Commission said it was saddened by the development which goes contrary to nationwide condemnation of political party vigilantism prior to the 2016 general election.

The NCCE as an Independent Governance Institution vehemently condemned the statement endorsing the formation of the NDC vigilante group

The Commission in a statement said it takes the opportunity to once again remind all political parties of their responsibility towards the preservation of peace, law and order in our democratic dispensation.

“All political parties especially the NPP and NDC must disband existing vigilante groups with immediate effect. Security agencies must be proactive in clamping down such illegal groups,” it said.
According to the NCCE, vigilantism will not promote national peace and security. Vigilantism breads political tension and political intolerance with the tendency to destroy all the gains made under the 4th Republic.
