Properties Destroyed As KNUST Students Protest (PHOTOS+VIDEO)

Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have vandalised school properties in a demonstration against authorities of the school following the arrest of 10 students.

The students, numbering over hundred are clad in red and have mounted barricades on some roads on the campus.

As part of the demonstration, the students are expected to boycott lectures.

Meanwhile, the executive council of the SRC said the demonstration was necessary to end the management’s neglect of students.

However, things got out of hands on Monday during the protest as various properties were destroyed.

According to Peace FM correspondent, Samson K Nyamekye, there has been reinforcement of police and military personnel.

Speaking to Sampson K. Nyamekye, the President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Elisha Essumang Oheneba described the situation as worrying however believed the students protested against the authorities of the school following what the students believed it was affecting their comfortable stay in the school.

Peacefmonline has gathered that the school authorities will be having a press conference on the issue soon as the Regional Security Council readies to meet the authorities of the school over the development.

Background

The students were arrested for holding vigil on campus last Friday without permission according to the school authorities.

One other student who was allegedly manhandled by the internal security is currently on admission at the KNUST hospital.

The arrest came after the KNUST management served notice that it had suspended the organisation of vigils (morales) in the school.

The management said this was because of “several negative issues encountered recently with respect to morales in the hall.”

The arrests angered some parents and guardians who accused the authorities of intimidation.

Some of the protestors called for the removal of the Vice-Chancellor.

The SRC said the actions of the campus security and the police officers were a “gross deviation” because the two agencies were rather to protect them.
