Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Weija-Gbawe Assembly in the Greater Accra Region, Patrick Kwesi Brako Kumor, has disclosed that the assembly would soon prosecute churches, politicians, individuals and companies who indiscriminately place advertisement posters on unauthorised places within the knowledge of the municipality. 

According to him, the practice was costing the assembly huge sums of money to mutilate the posters.

To bring the situation under control, the MCE stated that the assembly was going to engage the services of some youth in the municipality who will be positioned at vantage places to prevent the haphazard postings of such advertisements.

“So, if you are caught flouting this directive by the assembly, the law will deal with you. We believe that if one or two persons are prosecuted, it would surely serve as a deterrent to others,” he stressed.

According to the MCE, people who were mostly guilty of the offense were politicians and event organisers, and thus advised them to refrain from the practice in order not to land themselves into trouble.

“We are going to send a team from the Assembly to visit churches, lorry parks, market centres, companies and institutions within the municipality, to educate them on such acts and that the assembly will not tolerate such practices any more,” he stated.

The MCE called on churches, politicians and event organisers to rather post their advertisements on commercialised billboards, which have been designed specifically for such purposes.

Mr Kumor issued the warning when he together with the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mrs Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah, and the Municipal Coordinator, Ms Mercy Quansah, led a clean-up exercise organised by the assembly in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited on Saturday.

The exercise, which started from Mallam-Junction through McCarthy Hill junction was aimed at ridding the municipality of filth and further complement President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

Speaking in an interview with Today after the exercise, Mr Kumor indicated the preparedness of the assembly to help fight filth that has engulfed the municipality.

He said the quantum of waste collected within the municipality should serve as a wake-up call for stakeholders to prioritise waste management in their surroundings.

The MCE further urged the residents keep Weija-Gbawe clean and healthy.

He also pleaded with the residents and market folks to change their attitudes towards clean-up exercises and actively participate in them.

For her part, the Municipal Coordinator, Madam Mercy Quansah, stated that the assembly was collaborating with some waste management companies to effectively deal with the situation to save the environment.

She added that dustbins have been placed at vantage places to prevent indiscriminate littering.

Madam Quansah advised the people not to litter but rather ensure that the right things were done to keep the municipality clean.
