Ghana Must Win 2018 AWCON Trophy At All Cost - Songo

Popular Sports Journalist, Patrick Osei Agyemang better known as ‘Countryman Songo’ has challenged the Black Queens to win the 2018 edition African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) to be hosted in Ghana.

According to Countryman Songo, its been long overdue for Ghana’s Senior female team to win a trophy on African soil especially being the first team to represent Africa at the Women’s World Cup since its inception.

Speaking on Ghanaweb TV’s Sports Check show, the popular Sports Journalist blamed the past Ghana Football Association executives for the Black Queens failure to lift a single AWCON trophy.

He said, “It all comes back to that bad administration we had for 13 years, when we talk about Women’s football it was Nigeria and Ghana. Why is it that we were not able to win one African Cup with the Black Queens because they were the first to go to the World Cup, so we should have built from there. At least on African soil we should have a trophy, Nigeria has won more than eight times what is happening to us. I am expecting that this is supposed to be host and win. The first target is to qualify for the World Cup then we have to make sure that we are in the finals to win this trophy at all cost.

Countryman Songo added that the three friendly matches set aside to aid the team as they prepare for the tournament should gear them up after playing several Ghanaian clubs all in a bid to get the team in shape for the tournament which commences on November 17.

He however charged the Sports Ministry to provide the needs of the Black Queens since they’ve been tasked to host and win. He further advised the Sports Ministry to advertise the 2018 AWCON to “Ghanaians so that they can fill the stadium and give morale to the Queens, then they can win the trophy.”

The Controversial Sports Journalist emphatically stated that the 2018 AWCON should not be a fiasco because there must be a cherry-trophy on the taxpayers money which was used to organize the tournament.

“They have to win this trophy at all cost, the taxpayer’s money cannot go waste, because we are using it to host this tournament. People will come in as LOC, Sports Ministry and Football people and be taking periderms and sleeping in big hotels and after the tournament there is nothing to show and the taxpayers money goes waste again,” Countryman Songo said on Ghanaweb TV’s Sports Check.

He added, “At all cost we have to support Black Queens as a nation, give them what they want so that they can win this trophy because it’s a shame that we’ve not been able to win this trophy.”

The Black Queens would lock horns with Algeria, Mali and Cameroon in Group A in other to proceed to the next round of the tournament. Defending champions Nigeria would face against South Africa, Kenya and Zambia in Group B. The tournament would be held at the Accra and Cape Coast stadium.
