The Ghana Revenue Authority has cautioned traders in Koforidua against stocking and selling products such as bottled water and carbonated drinks without the tax stamp.

According to GRA, failure to comply with the tax stamp law was a punishable offence and therefore called on retailers to ensure that products bought from the warehouses had the stamp or apply to any GRA office for the stamps.

GRA gave the warning when over 30 shops under a special exercise conducted by the GRA in Koforidua were found to have defaulted with the rule and so some of their goods without the tax stamp were seized.

Two of the shops were found to have used fake stamps on their products and they claimed that their suppliers gave it to them. 

Mr Theophilus Tetteh, a leader of the Tax force therefore advised the traders to be vigilant and not to accept any stamp from anybody except from the GRA office for authenticity adding that ignorance was not an excuse.

He also indicated that the tax stamps were not transferrable and so every new stock must have its own stamps.

Meanwhile, some of the traders whose goods were seized told GNA that, the notice for application was too short and so pleaded with GRA to give them enough time to sell off the old stock while their applications for the stamps were being processed.
