Degraded Desiri Reserve re-planted

About 1,500 hectares of the degraded Desiri Forest Reserve had been replanted under the governments plantation development programme launched in 2004. Species planted include Mahogany, Emire, Ofram, Cedrella and Teak, Mr Lawrence Kwabena Brobbey, Plantation Programme Supervisor, told the Ghana News Agency. He said added to the restoration of the forest were jobs for about 500 people and increased food production. The programme is being funded through the HIPC funds. Mr Brobbey, however, raised concern about the activities of illegal farmers and chainsaw operators, which he said could wreck efforts at salvaging the reserve. He appealed to the Forestry Commission to act with urgency to stop any further destruction of the forest.
