MCE to ensure sanity in the operation of the NHIS

The Asante-Mampong Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Daniel Appau Ohyeamang, has said he would ensure sanity in the operation of the Mutual Health Insurance Scheme in the area. He has already ordered an audit into the financial management of the scheme. Addressing an annual performance review meeting of the Municipal Health Directorate at Asante-Mampong, he said things needed to be streamlined to speed up the re-imbursement for drugs and services provided. Mr Ohyeamang said the Municipal Assembly would go to every length to make sure that the people have access to quality health care. Madam Rebecca Dokurugu, the Municipal Health Director, said they would focus on improving maternal and infant health care, reduce cases of Tuberculosis (TB) and build the human resource base. She expressed concern about the surge in diabetes and hypertension in the area. There has, however, been marked improvement in disease surveillance and response. Madam Dokurugu appealed for an ambulance for movement of patients to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and adequate staff accommodation. Dr Emmanuel Ahiable, Medical Superintendent of the Asante-Mampong District Hospital, said they were determined to get the facility upgraded and to raise performance. He complained about inadequate health personnel, the absence of a surgeon and an Eye Specialist. Dr Ahiable said despite the challenges, they had reduced maternal deaths from 10 in 2008 to three in 2009.
