Media Coalition Unimpressed With Galamsey Queen Deportation

The media Coalition against illegal mining says it is disappointed at government’s decision to discontinue prosecution of notorious Chinese illegal miner, Aisha Huang.

Convener of the group is unhappy that Huang has been deported without going through the full rigours of the law. Popularly called the galamsey queen, Huang was arrested in May 2017 for engaging in illegal mining activities.

She was deemed to be very powerful and well connected to people in high places and always had a way of getting herself out of trouble anytime she was arrested.

Despite being arrested and going in and out of court since last year, her name never disappeared in the illegal mining business.

Her arrest and prosecution did not appear to have changed anything.

Reports suggested that she was put into an Ethiopian Airways flight which departed the country at 2:00pm, Wednesday.

Government sources say she was deported over immigration breaches.

But the decision to deport her has been a subject of criticism.

Convener of the media coalition against illegal mining Ken Ashigbe says the Attorney General needs to explain why the galamsey queen was deported when she could still have prosecuted, jailed and deported after serving her term.

I am not disappointed at the CID deporting her, I am disappointed at why we will issue a nolle prosequoi. Why will that happen? Why will we say we are disinterested in a case we have been following all this while? Will this deter other foreigners from coming to destroy our environment?” he asked

He was convinced a Ghanaian caught in a similar situation in China would have had a different treatment and wondered why the Attorney General allowed the deportation to happen.
