The Electoral Commission has set January 31, 2019 to hold by-election for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency in Accra.
The parliamentary seat became vacant following the demise of Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko on November 21, 2018 in the United States after a protracted ailment. Mr. Agyarko was serving his second term in office as a Member of Parliament for the area on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party when he died. He was first elected in 2012 before being re-elected in 2016.
The Electoral Commission consequently convened an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting on Monday December 24 where a date was agreed on for the by-election.
“All registered political parties present at the meeting agreed to the proposal by the Electoral Commission that the by-election for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency will take place on Thursday, January 31, 2019,” an EC statement announced.
The Ayawaso West Wuogon seat is a swing one with the NPP winning most of the times since 1992.
As the time ticks for the impending by-elections, some known faces have expressed interest in replacing Emmanuel Agyarko.
Actor John Dumelo and former CEO of the Ghana Free Zone Authority are in the race to represent the opposition National Democratic Congress.
Edward Agyekum Kufuor also known as Chief Kufuor, a son of former president John Agyekum Kufuor, as well as Mr. Agyarko’s wife have all indicated their interest to stand on the ticket of the governing NPP.
Some political watchers are suggesting that the by-election could serve as test case to assess President Akufo-Addo’s popularity among the elite.
