20-year carpenter jailed 25 years for defilement

A 20-year-old carpenter has been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment by the Kumasi Circuit Court "3" for defiling an eight-year-old girl. Gbonlezolume Komla Sasu pleaded guilty to the offence. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Regina Addo-Yobo, prosecuting told the Court presided over by Mr Justice D.W.P Amedior, that the victim lives with an auntie in the same house together with the convict at Oforikrom, a suburb of Kumasi. She said on January 6, this year, at about 0730 hours, the victim complained of abdominal pains to the Auntie and upon interrogation, mentioned Sasu as inserting his manhood into her vagina. According to the prosecution, the victim told the auntie that, at about 2000 hours on January 3, this year, Sasu sent her to buy him a sachet of alcoholic beverage from a nearby drinking spot. Upon her return, Sasu asked her to bring it to his room. Sasu then forced her to sit on his lap, removed her panties and had carnal knowledge of her. DSP Addo-Yobo said, the auntie armed with this information, made a report to the Oforikrom Police and later, the case was transferred to the Manhyia Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Police Service. A medical form was issued to the victim to attend hospital and upon examination the doctors confirmed that the girl had been defiled. The Prosecutor said after investigation Sasu was arrested and in his caution statement he admitted the offence.
