The Black Stars of Ghana, devoid of many of its established stars, crushed Angola's Africa Cup of Nations dream, as a 16th minute goal by Rennes forward, Asamoah �Baby Jet� Gyan, eliminated the host nation with a 1-0 quarter-final win to keep them on course for a fifth title. The French-based striker pounced on a precision diagonal through pass from Udinese midfielder, Kwadwo Asamoah, outsprinting flat-footed defenders, Zuela and Kali, before drilling an expert finish from the right-hand side of the penalty area past Angolan goalie, Fernandes Carlos. Ghana, a four-time African Cup champion who has also qualified for the World Cup later this year, will either play Zambia or Nigeria. The energy showed by the youthful Ghana side in beating the host nation was simply superb. Angola's Black Antelopes have never reached the last four in their history, although the last host nation to fail to reach the semi-finals was Ghana, when they were beaten by South Africa ten years ago. But Angola certainly had their chances to force extra-time during a frustrating afternoon of squandered chances. The host nation will be left thinking it should have been them progressing, Palancas Negras striker Manucho wasting several good chances. Former Manchester United and Hull City striker Manucho will pick up most of the criticism, spurning a hat-trick of gilt-edged opportunities. The signs of adrenalin pumping were clearly evident from the outset - Andre Ayew booked inside the opening 30 seconds for diving in on Mabina - but there were also nerves as both sides looked to settle quickly. As a severely depleted Ghana side marched on in search of their first continental crown in 28 years Angola rued not putting away a number of clear cut chances, not least Manucho's shot over the woodwork approaching the interval. Angola made two changes from the side that qualified for the last eight with a goalless draw against Algeria - defender Stelvio returning from suspension and three-goal hero Flavio back from injury to join Manucho up front. Ghana, missing a raft of star players including Michael Essien, made one alteration from their last run out, Mathew Amoah making way for Qatar-based midfielder Opoku Agyemang. A minute's silence for the victims of the Haiti earthquake preceded this first ever competitive meeting between the two west African states. Angola's president, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, sporting the team scarf, eased into his seat just in time to watch Ghana's Andre Ayew booked in the opening seconds for a foul on Mabina. With the stakes high an understandably nervy opening saw Ghana defender Lee Addy twice inadvertently try to lob his own keeper, captain Richard Kingson.
