Encroachers Take Over Accra-Tema Railway Line

The Ghana Railways Company Limited (GRCL) had scheduled to open passenger service on the Accra Tema, Accra-Nsawam railway line today, January, 8, 2019.

However, that plan has been put on hold because encroachers have taken over the railway line.

Speaking in an interview on Monday’s edition of Peace FM morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, sector Minister, Joe Ghartey said they need to hold on with their plan for the encroachers to be moved and to avoid the loss of life.

According to him, even though the ministry in collaboration with GRCL made sure the encroachers stayed away from the railway line some time ago, they came back during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

"Areas such as Circle, Avenor, and Achimota are filled with people trading and doing other activities. Motor cycles are even using the railway line; very surprising. The ministry has therefore given the GRCL two weeks to ensure the encroachers vacate the area for the trains to start working" he indicated.
