Minister Challenges Students

The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has challenged students in the country to develop an interest in undertaking science and mathematics programmes. It is unfortunate that most students in our schools find difficulties in the study of Science and Mathematics. Students perceive the study of Science and Mathematics as very difficult, he disclosed. He made the observation during the commissioning of a three unit science classroom block, and sachet water plant for the Aburi Girls Senior High School, in Aburi last Saturday. Speaking at the short, but impressive ceremony, Mr. Ampofo argued that the country would benefit immensely, if students developed the interest to undertake science and mathematics programmes, since their study provides speedy and accelerated development for any country that gives priority to them. He assured the school of the governments commitment to improving educational standards in the country, including the Aburi SHS. Buttressing his remarks, he mentioned the giant strides the government had made in the educational sector, through the provision of logistics, classroom blocks, and other facilities to improve on the standard of education in the country. He, however, cautioned that the assurance of quality teaching and learning was not the sole responsibility of the government alone, but the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in the educational sector. Elaborating on what necessitated the school to construct the two facilities, which were estimated to cost GH106,000, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Sylvia Asempa, said lack of adequate classroom blocks for the study of science was a serious constraint on the number of students who wanted to take science in the school. She said that upon discussions with the Parents/Teachers Association (PTA), and with support from the Akuapem South Municipal Assembly, they decided to construct the block to increase the intake of students who wanted to study science. On the sachet water plant, arguably one of the first of its kind in the various SHS in the country, the Headmistress pointed out that it would help the school, not only to solve the perennial water shortage, but also help improve the financial position of the school, though the sales of the water. The plant can currently produce 400 bags of sachet water for consumption and commercial usage.
