Former headmaster of Accra Academy is dead

The death of Mrs. Beatrice Abla Lokko (Nee Awadzi) is reported in Accra on Tuesday January 19, 2010. She was 60. The late Mrs Lokko taught English language and literature at Accra Academy since 1974, and was appointed Head of the English Language Department , a position she held until 1990, when she was appointed Assistant Headmistress (Administration) under the then Headmaster, Mr. V.B. Freeman. In 1996, she was appointed the Acting Headmistress on the retirement of Mr Freeman. In 1997 she was appointed the substantive Headmistress. In 2008 she was received the Ghana Women's Achievers Award for excellence in Education by the Ghana National Honorary Awards of Fame (GNAHAF). She also received an award for outstanding bravery in promoting educational excellence, and the first ever woman to head a boys institution in Ghana and Africa at large by the Ghana Country Award Council. Upon promotion, she became the District Director of Education in the Akuapim South Municipality of the Eastern Region. Her last station before she retired in September 2009 was Gomoa District in the Central Region where she worked as District Director of Education. She is survived by her husband, Mr. C.B. Lokko, and four children. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
