Another Shocker - Amofa, Who Was Killed By Police, Not Armed Robber – CID Report

Investigations have revealed that Emmanuel Amofa, 27, who was killed by police at Agbogba on suspicion that he was an armed robber, is innocent.

Information gathered by The Finder indicates that the report of the investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service exonerating the victim has been submitted to the Attorney-General’s Department.

The investigations found that Amofa, who met his untimely death on Monday, April 16, 2018, was not armed and kept pleading that he was not an armed robber.
The investigations corroborated the autopsy report, which indicates that  Amofa was shot at close range by police at Agbogba.

This means that the police could have arrested him even if he was a robber.

Apology and compensation for the family

According to information, the investigative report recommended an apology and compensation for the family.

No action taken against implicated police officers

Strangely, the report recommended more training for the police officers who killed the innocent man instead of interdiction and prosecution.

Autopsy report

The autopsy report revealed that Amofa suffered a broken leg, had his front teeth out and was shot at close range.

The autopsy report also showed that he was molested and severely beaten by the police.

But the police claimed the deceased was part of an armed robbery gang that was chased by the police.
The police said they received a distress call between 2 and 3am on Sunday, theyr which a patrol team was called in to respond.

According to the police, in the process, they encountered three suspected armed robbers, including the deceased, who was carrying a locally manufactured pistol.

The police said in an attempt to search the late 27-year-old, he struggled with the police officers and took to his heels.

According to police, the operational men managed to demobilise him, with Amofa sustaining gunshot wounds, and was rushed to the hospital, but he passed on before they got to the hospital.

The police denied accusations that they brutalised the deceased after the two suspects they accosted jumped the wall into the nearby cemetery.

According to police, the other two persons, who were later arrested, have been granted bail by the police.
But some eyewitnesses said the deceased was unarmed at the time he was being chased by the police.
“He was not wielding a gun or any weapon; the police killed him deliberately and allowed the criminals to escape,” one of them said.

Another eyewitness said he saw the late Amofa and the police exchanging words when he told them he was innocent.

“They won’t listen to him and they tortured him until he ran into the building opposite the bar. They shot after him and all I saw later was his dead body being dragged towards the police vehicle,” the witness added.

Amofa was hanging out with his friends at a pub after they had observed the one-week celebration of the death of their peer.

The police patrol team, upon their arrival at the scene, alleged that one of them was wielding a gun.
Amofa’s friends then bolted, leaving him behind as the police allegedly assaulted him several times.
He scaled a wall into a house across the road in an attempt to escape.

He was, however, chased by the police, who shot at him several times. He was eventually hit by a bullet and his body was dragged out of the house.

The family of the deceased insisted that he is not an armed robber, and accused the police of deceit and extra judicial killings.

The family is incensed by reports that their son was shot because he is an armed robber.
“When we were shown his body, you could tell he has been assaulted. There was little change in his form, just that his head looked swollen.

“From the story that has been put out there by the police, you can clearly see the police has something to hide. We, as a family of the deceased, are not going to lay this matter to rest until the perpetrators are brought to book,” Amofa’s elder brother vowed.

“We the family are traumatised,” the deceased’s sister added.
“I have four brothers. My dad was expecting my brothers to carry his coffin – two in front, two behind. But look at us,” she lamented.

She reiterated the vow to get justice no matter what, stating that they “are not going to rest; trust me, even if it will take my last blood".

Elder sister of the victim, Nana Akua Amofa told journalists at a press conference that Amofa had never in his entire life held a gun and that he was not an armed robber as claimed by the police.

She said her younger brother and his friends were subjected to undue beatings and torture by the police, and when he attempted to scale the wall of his father’s carpenter friend’s house to seek refuge, the police opened fire behind him.

According to her, Amofa managed to scale the wall and entered the house of his father’s friend, but the police followed him there, and despite his plea for mercy, he was murdered in cold blood.
She has, therefore, tasked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to initiate an investigation into the matter and bring the ‘killer’ cops to book to face the law.

The father of the deceased was equally inconsolable, saying, “I am really bereft of a suitable way of expressing my emotion. I am so devastated it seems the world around me has crumbled.

“I am not worried about his death, but if the boy had actually stolen something or gone on an armed robbery mission, then I will have no (qualms) about it. One man can hardly defeat a dozen. Assuming that you caught him, beat him up; (but) why shoot him? Why shoot him?” he questioned repeatedly.
