Menzgold Saga Should Be Politicized; Gov’t Has Social Contract With Ghanaians – Suhuyini

Member of Parliament for Tamale North constituency, Alhassan Suhuyini has stated that there is nothing wrong politicizing issues surrounding the shutdown of Menzgold Ghana Limited as government has a social contract with its citizens.

Former host of ‘Alhaji and Alhaji’ political show on Radio Gold, Mr. Suhuyini who was speaking on TV3's New Day on Thursday said persons from all political divide owe a sense of responsibility to the citizenry.

“The Menzgold saga should be politicized; there is no use of politics if it doesn’t guarantee the security of the citizens. As citizens, the government owes us, to help us; in whatever situation citizens find themselves because this is a matter of livelihood,” stated.

He however asserted the government “rolled a red carpet” for the Chief Executive of Menzgold, Nana Appiah Mensah, popularly known as NAM 1 by giving him invitation to the presidency among others.

“The President tweeted about how such a man inspires him. Ministries of government such as the Ministry of Trade and Finance organized programs to award NAM 1, and he got to travel with ministers,” he allegedly mentioned.

Meanwhile, government has since last week denied posting such tweet in which it is alleged the President praised NAM1 for the successes of his businesses.

But Suhuyini insisted that the said tweet is not falsehood as has been stated by the Presidency, noting it has just been pulled down from the original account.

He again alleged that government is only pretending to be serious about the whole NAM1 and Menzgold issue which have caused thousands of people to lose their investments.

The Tamale North lawmaker maintained there are credible and logical assessments for accusing the government of being responsible for the Menzgold crisis.

“Government is pretending to freeze the accounts of NAM1 after giving him the time to move some of his assets and sell. We have evidence from the wife packing things out of the shop at midnight, security men were called by neighbours and no one answered,” he further alleged.

Nana Appiah Mensah is currently in Dubai Police custody after a court order under the directive of President Akufo-Addo was issued for his arrest in Ghana following issues regarding his company, Menzgold.

The Securities and Exchange Commission ordered the shutdown of his company last year for not having the required license to operate.

This led to some agitations among customers of the company and the general public as a whole since Menzgold has not paid its customers money deposited with the company.
