US Congressman's Appeal To Sanction Ken Agyapong Is So Disrespectful - Nana Ofori Owusu

Aspiring National Chairman of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu has rebuked US Representative for Georgia’s 4th congressional district, Henry Calvin Johnson Jr, for writing to their Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo to sanction Ghanaian lawmaker Kennedy Ohene Agyapong over the death of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale.

Hussein-Suale’s murder on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 has sent shock waves across the world.

The investigative journalist was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Madina.

Following his death, the US Congressman has written to the US State Department, calling for a "maximum U.S. diplomatic, law enforcement, and intelligence support for an investigation into the murder of journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale..."

"The professional execution-style slaying of Mr. Hussein-Suale in the aftermath of Mr. Agyapong’s disgraceful threats raises serious and credible suspicions about the circumstances of this murder. We cannot allow the voices of truth to be muffled by those who would benefit from silence and deceit. Our cherished American principles of freedom of the press necessitate a prompt and thorough investigation," he said.

The US Congressman has asked the State Department to "conduct an independent assessment of the murder and the quality and scope of the Ghanaian government’s investigation; and Determine what sanctions may be levied against Kennedy Agyapong MP, including a ban on travel to the U.S., a ban on access to the U.S. banking system for Mr. Agyapong and his businesses, and any other appropriate and applicable sanctions".

Responding to the issues raised by the US Congressman, Nana Ofori Owusu told sit-in host Nana Yaw Kesseh that the statement undermine the security prowess of Ghana.

According to him, the US Congressman has disrespected Ghanaians, purporting that Ghana cannot undertake an independent and thorough investigation into the murder of the journalist which is "so disrespectful".

"It is so disrespectful. If you read the content of his statement apart from the Universal remark he made, he disrespected us as a people,” he lamented.
