‘Bloody Widow' Placard: Minority Told To Read Exodus 22:22-23

Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah has asked his fellow MPs to read Exodus 22:22-23 (“Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. 23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.).

He says their punishment awaits them for the cruel manner and harsh words used against elected 'widow' Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

Speaking in an interview with Peace FM News, the Vice Chairman for the Committee of Defence and Interior who sounded biblical, added that his colleague MPs will not go unpunished as they will face the wrath of God for their unsavory act against the Member of Parliament.

"What happened in parliament today is unfortunate and my colleague MPs on the minority side should bow their heads in shame.

"What has the poor woman done to deserve this treatment, but don’t forget, God fights for the widow and the motherless," he added.

Lydia Seyram Alhassan, was sworn into Parliament on Tuesday, by taking the Oaths of Allegiance and Member of Parliament administered by the First Deputy Speaker, Hon Joseph Osei Owusu.

Moments before her swearing-in, however, the Minority in Parliament staged a walkout of Parliament in protest against what they (the Minority) described as state-sponsored violence during the by-election at Ayawaso West Wuogon.

Some Minority MPs shouted shame and jeered as the Speaker of Parliament read the summons from the Electoral Commission.

Some also held up placards which read 'bloody widow', in reference to the confusion in the incidents of brutality from National Security personnel during the by-election.

“In commiseration to support our comrades and citizens that were unnecessary hurt and brutally assaulted, I am sorry to say we cannot indulge in this. Our side of the house cannot be here to witness this swearing in,” the Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak said on the floor of the House.

Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan replaced her husband as the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency after winning the by-election held on Thursday, 31st January 2019 in Accra.

Madam Alhassan, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, was the second wife of the late MP Mr Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko.

She polled 68.80 per cent of the valid votes cast.

Her closest challenger, Mr Kwasi Delali Brempong of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) polled 30.52 per cent while Mr William Kofi Dowokpor of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Mr Clement Boadi of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) polled 0.58 and 0.10 per cent respectively.
