A Widow Should Stop Everything In Her Life Because Her Husband Is Dead?” – Dela Coffie Speaks For Lydia Alhassan

There could be nothing more instructive than these words below shared by a great mind. Thank you so much Selorm Branttie:

It is sad that people comment as if they come from perfect families.

A lot of us here are sons, daughters and grandsons of first, second and third wives who were recognized in customary practices save for the imposition of a foreign cultural practice cloaked in religion.

I daresay that some of you even had your fathers build separate houses for each set of siblings you had, and you mixed well with your half brothers and sisters.

Yet you have the nerve to come here today and insult mothers, who don't depend on you for their daily bread.

As an extension, this mirrors society's attitude to widows and their kin, legitimate wives or not. We look down on widows as incomplete people, and we believe they shouldn't be strong, and that they should only be in vulnerable positions where they beg everyone even for food to eat.

Yes, widows shouldn't be able to continue business or professional life on their own terms because they lost their husband's, their men, their "rock".

A widow should stop everything in her life, including business activities that feed her and her children because her husband is dead. Should that be a widows debt?

When a woman's husband dies, does the whole world stop rotating? Are flights cancelled? Does the president have to step down?

The show goes on. Leave a woman to grieve, but know also that she has a right to keep life going for the sake of herself and whatever else she deems worthy of attention. Nobody is indispensable, and conducting business doesn't show a lack of sympathy.

If the man were a Muslim, he would have been buried 24 hours later. Would it justify her continuing her business because he has been buried? So if a man dies and he is buried 49 weeks later the woman must wait till he is buried before the cycle of grief is complete?

It's quite obvious that we are not as enlightened as we pretend to be.

Look at your cousins, look at your own siblings, look at yourselves.

When you point a finger, look at the rest pointing back at you..
