Salaga Incident 'Unnecessary And Unfortunate' - Dan Botwe

The Minister for Regional Reorganization and Development, Dan Kwaku Botwe has described as unfortunate and unnecessary the incident that happened in Salaga following the naming of Damango as the regional capital for the Savannah region.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, he explained that the youth of Salaga have no right to take the law into their own hands to destroy properties.

He added that if such acts are not immediately prevented it will escalate, paving way for other regions to imitate.

Condemning the act carried out by the youth in Salaga, he intimated that they will continue to carry out the activities as scheduled but will not countenance any act of violence.

He charged the police to arrest all the perpetrators involved, adding that such attitude should not be countenanced.

"The prerogative of naming a region is with the president so defying like what the youth in Salaga did is just like defying the president," he said.

Some youth of Salaga in the newly created Savannah Region were on rampage yesterday (Tuesday), setting ablaze the offices of the New Patriotic Party in the town to protest the announcement of Damongo as the regional capital.

Billboards within Salaga bearing photographs of President Nana Akufo-Addo have all been pulled down by the angry protesting youth who threatened to storm the residence of the East Gonja Chief Executive to burn down his residence, as well as the District Assembly Office.

"But calm has been restored in the area and we are expecting that the residents of the area will assist the police in the investigations," Northern Regional Police commander, DSP Yussif Tanko said.

The youth claimed Salaga is the only NPP seat in the whole of the Gonjaland, hence the President should have made the town the regional capital for the Savannah Region as a reward for voting NPP.

Seven (7) people have so far been arrested in connection with the act as the police continue to hunt for the others.
