Porter remanded for possessing Indian hemp

The Asamankese Circuit Court has remanded in prison custody Emmanuel Kwasi Kadjaku, a porter, for possessing narcotic without lawful authority. He pleaded not guilty and would re-appear on February 22, 2010. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector, Ben Brew, told the court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Siameh that on April 18, 2008, Asamankese Police had a tip-off that Kadjaku and five others were at the banks of the Abuchen River distributing parcels of Indian hemp to peddlers. The Police, therefore, proceeded to the river and the moment the accused and his friends saw them they took to their heels. The five accomplices jumped into the river and swam to the other bank to escape arrest but Kadjaku, who was apparently not good at swimming, was arrested. Kadjaku left behind a poly sack containing 18 parcels and a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. The substances were sent to a police forensic laboratory where it was confirmed to be Indian hemp weighing 6,840 grams.
