A Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Nyamah, has called on political actors and leaders of the nation to support the disbandment of vigilante groups in the country as advocated by the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Contributing to a panel discussion on Kokrokoo on Peace FM, Richard Nyamah noted that the time has come for the various vigilante groups to be taken down by their political benefactors.

According to him, the groups have grown wings and out of the control of their political parties, and so the earlier they are disband the better.

Explaining to host Kwami Sefa Kayi, the NPP devotee stated that it is true some of these groups have political affiliations owing allegiance to either the NPP or the opposition NDC.

"They are hopeful when they help their party to come to power, they will be recruited into the security services. So, there are some members of the vigilante groups who have been recruited into the Armed Forces and Police Service", he said.

He advised the political leaders to join forces with the appropriate authorities to disband the groups, but first ensure that members of these grouos that are unemployable, are provided with some kind of means to cater for themselves so they don't resort to violence.

He further urged the Electoral Commission to play a key role in the fight against electoral violence by removing the "human interface in our electoral system".

“It’s come to a point that, we the political parties are even losing control of these groups. We’ll need to have a larger debate. If we can depoliticize this whole vigilante thing, it will help. Let’s find a way to disband it and find employment for them, but Electoral Commission will have to play a major role in removing the human interface in our electoral system,” he added.
