SoNA 2019: Free SHS Policy "Has Come To Stay" – Prez Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has once again justified his decision to kickstart the ‘Free SHS’ policy – a policy that was his major campaign message in the 2016 elections, a few months after he was voted into power.

According to him, the policy which is currently running will go a long way to ‘revive’ Ghana’s economy when the youth are well educated.

We need an educated and skilled workforce to be able to operate the modern economy we are creating. The Free SHS is a start towards this goal,” he said.

He was emphatic during his delivery of his 3rd State of the Nation Address in parliament, Thursday, February 21, 2019 that “it is a policy that has come to stay.

The implementation of the free Senior High School (SHS) education policy began in September when the 2017/2018 academic year started.

The programme started with first year students in all public SHSs and Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions across the country.

The free SHS policy implies the absorption of all approved fees currently charged to students in public SHS and TVET Institutions
