Ningo Prampram MP, Sam George, has denied seeing any member of NDC-affiliated militia group, The Hawks, involved in the violence that occurred during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election on 31 January 2019.

Mr George, who appeared for the second time before the three-member Committee of Inquiry tasked to probe the incident, was asked if he had seen any members of The Hawks during the scuffle which erupted at the residence of the NDC's parliamentary candidate Delali Brempong.

Mr George responded: “My Lord, as far as my memory serves me, I did not see anybody wearing a t-shirt with The Hawks [inscription]”.

Mr George’s account runs opposite to that of the Director of Operations at the office of National Security, Colonel Michael Opoku, who blamed The Hawks for the violence that marred the by-election.

Colonel Opoku told the Commission on Wednesday, 20 February 2019 that one of the people arrested by the police during the skirmishes, is a known member of The Hawks.

“When you Google for information of The Hawks, you will see him… I’m told he is the chairman of the Hawks organisation”, he told the Commission.

A group of masked national security operatives fired gunshots and wounded some 16 supporters of the NDC at La-Bawaleshie near the private residence of Brempong, barely an hour into the by-election.

Mr George was slapped by a security operative during the melee.

Colonel Opoku admitted that the masked men were National Security operatives and revealed that the person who slapped the MP has been asked to “stand down” as the security hierarchy looks into the matter.
