Some parts of Accra have been experiencing strings of earth tremors causing residents of those affected areas to panic.
The recent tremor occurred on Saturday with a 3.9 magnitude on a Richter scale and affected areas like Gbawe, Sowutuom, Old Kasoa Barrier, New Bortianor, Awoshie, Abelemkpe, Tabora, Achimota, Ablekuma, Kissiman, Westland, Laterbiokorshie, Legon and McCarthy Hill.
The Ghana Geological Survey Authority has warned of an imminent earthquake following these strings of tremors.
So in the face of an earthquake what are you supposed to do?
In an exclusive interview with Peacefmonline.com, Mr. R.S. Nartey a lecturer and a Geologist said people living in earthquake-prone areas should be extra careful and pay heed to warning signs or alerts.
What to do during an earthquake
- According to Nartey, earthquakes come with vibration leading to the collapse of structures; hence if anyone is outside when it happens, avoid standing by structures, trees or power lines.
Apart from that:
- one can hide under furniture; table and hold on to it until it's over. According to him, "when you are under a table, you are more likely to survive than someone who is in the open"
- It's best to stay at a sturdy place indoors than be outside
- Stay put until it's over
Meanwhile, Mr. Nartey has urged the government to revamp the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) to have up to date equipment and technology to monitor the tremors and its impact because "these are warnings of major activity that is to come (earthquake).
