Danger Looms As Squatters Invade Water Reservoir

The Accra Water booster station at Okponglo, a suburb in Accra which supplies a greater part of the capital with water is under severe threat as some quarters have invaded the area with illegal structures. The squatters whose activities are said to be posing great health risks to the operation of water supply have been there close to one year now. In a joint visit by the Deputy Minister, Water Resource, Works and Housing, Dr. Hannah Bissiw and Major of Accra, Dr. Alfred Vanderpuiye, yesterday to the place, the Minister said the emergence of the slum poses a greater health risk to residents in Accra as it is very close to the reservoir which stores treated water from Kpong which are distributed to various homes. Dr. Bissiw said what makes it more alarming is that the barb wires which protect the reservoir from encroachers have been destroyed by these squatters. Besides anybody at all can contaminate the water and several lives will be affected. The Minister pleaded with the Major to act swiftly to avert any looming danger. She however urged people not to read politics into the issue as its a national issue which affects everybody.
