UEW Students Threaten More Chaos

Aggrieved students of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) have threatened to embark on demonstrations if their call for the resignation of the Vice Chancellor of UEW is not heeded to.

The students had been demonstrating since Monday, March 11, 2019, over the UEW’s Council’s decision to dismiss seven lecturers.

They were calling reinstatement of the affected lecturers and the resignation of the VC, UEW Vice-Chancellor Prof. Anthony Afful Broni.

Matters escalated on Thursday, March 14, 2019, when police moved in on the campus and fired bullets and teargas at the students.

The school was subsequently closed down and the students asked to go home.

But responding to news that they had been recalled to campus barely a day after they were asked to go home, they said calling them back to campus without the VC resigning would be like calling for more chaos.

They say their wish is for the VC to resign and as long as he remains at post, they will continue to protest

“We are protesting on the ground that we don’t want our VC anymore,” they told the media.

“If the VC does not resign and students are asked to return to the campus there will be more chaos,” some of the aggrieved students noted.

Teaching and non-teaching staff of UEW, DGN Online gathered, have left campus.

The VC says if he should resign then it means the University’s Council should also resign.

Meanwhile, commercial drivers opposite the UEW campus have threatened to embark on a demonstration in solidarity with the students by Monday, March 18, 2019, if the School authorities are unable to address the impasse.
