Police Take Over UEW Campuses

The Formed Police Unit (FPU) of the Ghana Police Service in Accra armed with water cannons have taken absolute control of the four campuses of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) providing 24 hours guard following violent protests against the authorities of school.

The three days of riot stem from the unpleasant decisions by the authorities to dismiss some lectures of the institution.

The taking over of the four campuses at the Winneba North, which serve as the main administration of UEW, Central, South and Ajumako, College of Languages campuses in the Ajumako- Enyan-Assim District was to protect life and property.

It all started when news broke out that some lecturers have been allegedly fired by the Vice Chancellor, Very Reverend Professor Afful Broni for no wrongdoing as alleged by the victims.

The alleged dismissal sparked off three days continued demonstration by the students that led to the destruction of property including window glasses of the Business school of UEW, the windscreen of a police vehicle and a school bus.

Two students sustained serious injuries and were treated and discharged at the University Hospital, but there was no recorded deaths as earlier speculated.

Mr Kwamena Duncan, the Central Regional Minister, with the advice of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) quickly moved in to close the institution on Thursday to save the situation but Mr Alexander Afenyo Markin, Member of Parliament for Efutu, also gave counter instructions that the students must not leave the campuses.

The FPU and other security agencies have been to the various hostels and halls of residence to force students out since the schools have been closed down.

A source at the school told the Ghana News Agency that the authorities of UEW decided to hold a press conference to give an overview and a road map to facilitate amicable solution to the impasse, on Friday, March, 15, but due to security reasons it has been postponed to either 27 or 28 March, 2019.

The students were calling for the reinstatement of three senior lecturers and also for the dismissal of the Vice Chancellor, Very Reverend Professor Afful-Broni to bring peace and harmony into the University.
