Disbanding Vigilante Groups: Ghana Awaits Leadership From NPP & NDC - Sammy Awuku

National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku has called on the leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stay committed to the cause of disbanding political vigilante groups in the country.

Sammy Awuku is asking his colleague politicians not to renege on the decision to have a meeting between the two main political parties - the NPP and NDC - with regard to President Nana Akufo-Addo's directive that they should find ways to dissolve vigilante groups in order to end political violence.

Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's flagship programme 'Kokrokoo', the NPP National Organizer was optimistic the leadership of the two parties can come to an agreement on the issue.

“For us in the NPP, what we want our NDC friends and colleagues to also do; come to the same table with honesty," he said.

Sammy Awuku further cautioned media houses in the country not to inflame passions by creating panic in their reportage on the issue.

He took a swipe at a media report on the De-Eye Group which labeled the group as a "militia'; asking how can you a vigilante group which condemns its colleagues for using violence to solve a problem?”

To him, for the disbandment of the vigilante groups to be successful, it behoves all parties including the media to work together.

“The nation awaits leadership from these two political parties . . . This discussion about disbanding these groups, they have come out strongly and we have shown leadership. We want the NDC to do same. However, what the NPP will not also support or condone is to deliberately create panic from some media quarters and media houses,” he stated.
