Doubts no longer exist about Raheem Sterling. No concerns over whether he will fulfil his potential at international level, no longer any nay-sayers, no longer any lists of alternatives to his selection, players that could excel in his role.
In fairness, there were never any doubts from those that matter. Gareth Southgate, Pep Guardiola – Sterling's coaches have long claimed to be mystified by the debate around the player. During the World Cup, plenty were calling for Sterling to be replaced. Southgate wouldn't hear of it.
This season has been his reward, Sterling his outstanding performer in a campaign that has seen England reach the UEFA Nations League finals and begin this, the European Championship qualifiers proper, with a convincing five goal victory.
