Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Wednesday, 3 April 2019 announced that the benchmark value of imports has been reduced by 50 percent, while import duties on cars have also been cut by 30 percent.
This according to him, will take effect on 4th April, 2019.
As a result, Peacefmonline.com started snooping on the 4th of April to find out if truly the reduction has taken effect.
Importers who went to the Port on Thursday to clear their vehicles confirmed the amount paid previously had been reduced.
A document sighted by Peacefmonline.com indicates that a vehicle which cleared at GHC22,000 previously, now cleared at GHC15, 405.99.
Meanwhile, Mr Ross Berizaya Ayine, a son of former Deputy Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine, is reported to have stated on his facebook wall that a Honda Civic Touring which cleared at GHC31,000 has been slashed to GHC18,000.
He wrote: “I’m very impressed and pleased with the NPP and Dr Bawumia for the reduction in import duties. This is a great move, and, by far, it’s the best policy in governance and in the right direction. God bless all who contributed to this success and to the brain(s) behind this splendid move.
“I cleared a Honda Civic Touring at GHC31,000 just last week and clearing another under GHC18000 today. If all successive governments could initiate these kinds of policies, Ghana, as a country, would be a better place to live; politics isn’t about colours but reality.”
