‘Fundamentals Are Weak’ Comment . . . Bawumia Deliberately Misled Ghana

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been accused of ‘deliberately misleading’ Ghanaians when he said the popular ‘fundamentals are weak’ comment was made in 2014.

Member of Parliament for Ketu South Constituency, Fiifi Kwetey speaking during a panel discussion on Joy Newsfile programme said it wasn’t an oversight and that the statement was made to achieve a purpose.

“Vice President Bawumia deliberately misled the country when he said this statement was made in 2014 . . . as a human being, you can make a genuine error and it can be forgiven but in this case, it was not an error, it was a deliberate misleading of the public. It (the lecture) was delivered on the 2nd May 2012. He chose 2014 for a reason because if he had mentioned 2012, the inconsistencies will be glaring. The fact that he said the cedi is doing well now (compared to the Mahama administration) is ‘pure mischief’," he indicated.

The famous ‘when the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you comment’ is attributed to Dr Bawumia when he spoke at a lecture a few years ago.

He reiterated it when he led the Economic Management team at a town hall meeting held a few days ago.

Even though the opposition NDC has been throwing his words back at him especially when the cedi started depreciating, he said at the town hall meeting that he still stood by it; adding the fall of the cedi was not due to weak fundamentals. Click to read
