The Government of Ghana and Czech Republic, have signed a 47.5 million Euros credit facility for the design, supply and installation of 50 steel bridges in some communities across the country to boost economic activities.

The credit facility forms part of government’s infrastructural development drive to stimulate economic growth and alleviate poverty.
The project would satisfy the basic human needs of Ghanaians to have access to hospitals, schools, markets and other social/cultural facilities, hampered by lack of bridges on rivers.

It would also remove traffic bottlenecks at river crossings and improve the movement of people and goods and services within the area of influence.

Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta, the Minister of Roads and Highways, signed on behalf of the Ghana Government, while the Ambassador of the Czech Republic initialled for his country.

Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Information Minister, who announced this at a news briefing, in Accra, on Wednesday, said at the end of the execution of the project, it would ensure all-year-round access to social/cultural facilities.

It would also eliminate interruptions in transporting people from one end to another, farm produce and other items during the rainy season.
The agreement required the replacement of some existing steel bridges on rivers and pedestrian bridges, including; the execution of all sub-structure works and approach road works.

According to the agreement, the Department of Feeder Roads would be allocated 20 bridges; 20 for the Ghana Highways Authority, while the Department of Urban Roads would receive 10.

The project is estimated to be completed within 24 months from the commencement date and credit facility is supposed to be approved by Parliament before any field work could begin.
