Ghanaian Referee Misses Out On World Cup

The only Ghanaian referee who was shot listed by FIFA to officiate at the world cup has failed to make the final cut for the tournament. Haruna Ayuba was part of the 57 referees selected across the globe for a special training for the tournament, but could not make the final 30. Referee Ayuba was however said to have performed creditably but could only make it to the waiting list. But the chairman of the Ghana Referees Association William Agbovi thinks Ayuba gave a good account of himself according to the report from FIFA. The mere fact that one of us has been at least earmarked to prepare for the World Cup in the event of any vacancyat least shows that the eyes of FIFA has caught one of us. We are also happy that given the exercises during the preparations he didnt fail in any of the exercises. Agbovi said. Haruna Ayuba refereed one match as an assistant referee at the just ended Africa Cup of Nations in Angola. The last Ghanaian to have refereed in a world cup was Justice Yeboah in Germany 2006 as an assistant while B.K Dwomoh was a centre referee in the 1982 world cup. The 30 referees selected by FIFA for this years world cup include four from Africa, Asia and the Concacaf confederations. While 10 were selected from Europe, six from South America, and two from New Zealand.
