Minister Gives Reason For Termination Of Irrigation Project

The Minister for Food and agriculture, Mr. Kwesi Ahwoi has said the Nobekaw Irrigation project in Asunafo South was terminated in May 2009 as a result of unsatisfactory progress of work by the contractor. According to the Minister, the project has been re-packaged and put on tender for bidding by other contractors. Mr. Kwesi Ahwoi stated this in parliament in response to a question by Hon. George Boakye, MP for Asunafo South. The MP wanted to know why work on the Nobekaw Irrigation project had come to a standstill. The Minister said the bids for the repackaged contract were opened in December 2009 and the evaluation was completed in February 4 2010 to be sent to the Arab bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) which is funding 83% of the project cost for its approval. The Minister said the project could be completed within six months by the contractor who will win the bid and the irrigation scheme is expected to benefit 120 farmers upon completion.
