Sunday, May 12, is International Mothers Day

Ghana will, on Sunday, May 12, join the rest of the world to celebrate the International Mothers’ Day in recognition and appreciation of the remarkable contributions mothers and motherly figures have made to society.

The custom of honouring mothers dates as far back as the 17th Century, where mothers and motherhood was celebrated to strengthen the bond.

It had since been celebrated on various days in many parts of the world within the months of March and May.
Mothers, on that day, are appreciated through various activities, most especially by giving them cards, flowers and gifts, and taking them out for special treats to show affection.

In Ghana, most churches organise special programmes to celebrate mothers, which include health screening and donation to deprived mothers.

The media, especially radio and television stations, as well as retail outlets run programmes and promotions to appreciate the role mothers have played.

Social media platforms would also be active with postings of photos of mothers and mother figures to honour them for the wonderful roles they play.

As Ghana joins the rest of the world to celebrate this year’s International Mother’s Day on Sunday, the Ghana News Agency, Friday interacted with the public to share their affection about their mothers.

“My mother has been the most important person in my life, she is always available when I need her. Her prayers has brought me this far. She is my superwoman and I do not know how my life would have been without her,” Mr Kwaku Manu, a trader at the Tema Station in Accra, said.

Mame Afua Mensah, a Bag Seller, said: “For me I celebrate my mother every day through consistent care and love. She had been my number one encourager in all I do and has supported me from childhood till now”.

“My Mother has been there for me through thick and thin, in times when all hope was lost, she stood by me, motivated me and ensured that I never gave up in anything I do. Thank you, mum, for your priceless support.”
