The Chairman of the 2005 Education Review Committee, Professor Jophous Anamuah-Mensah on Thursday called on graduates in science-oriented disciplines to create their own employment avenues. Professor Anamuah-Mensah, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), said this at the launch of the 10th anniversary celebration of the Centre for School and Community Science and Technology Studies (SACOST) of the UEW at Winneba. He called for the effective teaching of science and mathematics to ally fears on the learning of the two subjects by pupils. "We believe the time has come for us to build a solid foundation for science and technology to take off for the ordinary citizen to be able to apply it in his her daily activities. "We need a new way of teaching that promotes contextualization or conditioned learning, creativity, and innovation". Prof. Anamuah-Mensah appealed to teachers to abolish the old method of teaching to make the subjects more attractive to students. In a speech read for him, the Vice-Chancellor of the UEW, Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw said the Centre's mission is to cultivate quality knowledge for linking community and work place science and technology with that of school at the pre-university level. He therefore appealed to curriculum research and development Division (CRDD) of the Ghana Education Service for assessing the usefulness of the SACOST developed materials and giving its approval for their use as supplementary resource materials for teaching science in the Senior High Schools.
